100 years ago in April 1912, the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg and sank during her first and last voyage. Less than a third of the passengers survived. The disaster led to new safety regulations for all sailings including the requirement that there would always be enough lifeboats to provide room for everyone on board. Thereafter, wireless telegraphs were also required to be manned at all hours to make sure a ship could be called to assistance. This image gallery covers the building of the Titanic, launch, captain and crew, the sinking, rescue and the enquiry.
The History of Astronomy in Australia and New Zealand
Contained within is a gallery of images covering some of the main developments and observations in astronomy in Australia and New Zealand. Included are: Images of Halley's Comet, Richardson's Star Catalogue, the Sydney Observatory and the Wanganui Observatory.
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was an Italian astronomer and physicist. In 1610, he became the first person to use a telescope to make astronomical observations. He discovered the mountains on the Moon. He studied gravity, showing that heavy and light objects fall at the same rate. He also supported the Copernican theory that the Sun was at the centre of the solar system rather than the Earth. This belief was judged heretical by the Inquisition in 1633 and he was sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life.
Charles Darwin was a British scientist, born on 12 February 1809, who laid the foundations of the theory of evolution and transformed the way we think about the natural world. This gallery has images of his scientific expedition on the survey ship HMS Beagle, his discoveries in the Galapagos Islands and his publication “The Origin of Species”.
