Science Photo Library 'state of the eARTh' calendar highly commended

Judges at The National Business Calendar Awards Competition have awarded a highly commended certificate to the Science Photo Library in the category for typographic/free standing calendars and a certificate of merit in the Excellence in colour reproduction category.

The competition, sponsored by the British Advertising Calendar Association, British Printing Industries Federation, The London College of Printing, Wiggins Teape and Petrushkin has been running for 32 years. It aims to extend the use of printed calendars and encourage excellence in design and production. This year it attracted approximately 350 entries.

SPL's desktop calendar has a fitting topic to mark the Millennium the 'state of the eARTh'! This title reinforces SPL's current 'state of the ART' theme, which is being used in display advertisements and direct mail postcards.

Marketing director Maria Storey says: "The earth is a subject that is visually interesting and accessible through our pictures. Our calendar develops the current advertising theme using leading edge images that are also artistic. The calendar images of the earth are all seen from unusual perspectives and are not immediately recognisable for what they are. Full caption information is given on the reverse of each page.

"Although we did not want to produce a calendar that was too strongly environmental, this interpretation is there as an underlying theme. June, for example, is illustrated by a polluted beach and November by light pollution."

Designed by Richard Adam Associates, SPL's calendar was printed by The Beacon Press on totally chlorine-free paper, Hello Silk, from Robert Horne Assocs.

The Science Photo Library is the world's leading photo agency specialising in science, medicine and technology, with over 120,000 images in its collection. Independent, privately owned and the only one of its kind in Britain, SPL is renowned for its high quality picture bank, created by photographers, illustrators, scientists and medical specialists.
