Caption: Buttercup flower bud. Light micrograph of a cross-section through an immature wallflower bud (Ranunculus sp.), showing the male and female reproductive organs of the flower. The female carpels (solid blue) are at centre, some of which contain ovules (dark red). Surrounding these are many male anthers (blue and white), each of which have four pollen sacs filled with developing pollen grains, or male sex cells (brown and green). Encasing these are the bud's immature petals and sepals. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
