Caption: Glass fibre, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Glass fibres (one seen here in comparison with a hair, brown) are often used as a reinforcing agent. They are woven into sheets and then impregnated with a plastic resin to produce fibreglass. Other uses include as separators in batteries, diaphragms in fuel cells, fibre optic cables and super lightweight insulation. Magnification: x750 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
