Caption: Mistletoe stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a mistletoe (Viscum album) plant. The epidermis (outer layer) has a thick layer of cuticle made of waterproof wax (yellow). The inner cortex has bundles of supporting fibres (green) above a ring of phloem (red). Underneath this are the cambium (dark red ring), xylem vessels (brown), patches of parenchyma (green) and primary xylem (pink-green), with an inner bundle of fibres (green). The pith (large, centre) is made up parenchyma (red and green). Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
