Caption: Orchid tuber. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through the root tuber of an orchid (Phaius grandifolius) showing starch grains (blue-red and yellow-green) stored inside plastid cells called leucoplasts. Leucoplasts used to store starch are usually called amyloplasts. The outer wall of the amyloplast can be seen as a black outer membrane. Magnification: x46 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
