Caption: Ruptured Achilles tendon surgery. Surgical incision in the back of a patient's lower leg showing a ruptured Achilles tendon (horizontal, centre). This procedure is being carried out to repair the tendon. The tendon connects the major muscles of the calf (the gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel bone (calcaneus). The tendon can be injured through direct trauma, but it is more commonly ruptured during exercise or in a trip or fall. Initial treatment is to apply a splint. Physiotherapy and surgery may be needed.
