Caption: Particle detector chip. An integrated circuit from the Silicon Vertex Detector (SVX) - part of the particle detector that found the top quark in 1994. This chip allows the SVX to track the brief movements of particles called mesons, which are produced when protons are collided with antipro- tons at near light speed. Tracking particles like mesons allows physicists to look for evidence of the fleeting existence of the "top quark", one of the fundamental particles in nature. The top quark was found in 1994 at Fermilab, USA. Its existence supports the current "standard model" of the fundamental nature of matter.
