Caption: Charles Giles Bridle Daubeny (1795-1867), English botanist and geologist. Daubeny was born at Stratton, Gloucestershire, the son of a clergyman, and was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. His early research was in the volcanic mountains of the Auvergne in France. After touring through Europe studying volcanoes, he decided that their heat came from the reaction of water and the alkaline metals dee underground. He was appointed professor of chemistry at Oxford in 1822 and took the chair of botany at Oxford some 12 years later. He conducted experiments on the influences upon plant growth at the Oxford Botanical Garden.
