Caption: George Wilson (1818-1859), Scottish physician. Wilson was born and educated in Edinburgh. He trained in medicine, and despite gaining his doctorate he never practiced. Instead, he did research in physiology and in the history of science. He wrote significant studies on colour blindness and was the biographer of Henry Cavendish. Wilson is most famous as the first director of the Industrial Museum of Scotland. He expanded the collection by persuading expatriate Scots to donate specimens and artefacts from all over the world. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was a president of the Royal Scottish Society for the Arts.
