Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Particle detector. A technician works on the central tracking chamber of the CDF particle detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago, USA. The CDF or Collider Detector Facility records subatomic particles created in proton-antiproton collisions in the Tevatron collider. The central tracking chamber is one of many elements forming the detector. Charged particles pass through gas in the chamber and trigger electrons, which are recorded by wires strung through the the chamber. The technician is checking the readout electronics at the end of these wires on the central tracking chamber's end plate. Photographed in 1998. This part of the detector is in fact going to be changed for Run 2 starting in 2000. The model is DEE HAHN.
