Caption: Chemical warfare demonstration during the First World War. Picture posed in France by US troops, near front line trenches, to illustrate the effects of the toxic, chlorine-containing, phosgene gas. Phosgene disrupts gas exchange in the lungs, causing death from asphyxia. The soldier at left is not wearing a gas mask, while the ones at centre and right are wearing these devices that protect them from the effect of the gas. Photographed in 1918.
