Masked physicist works on the assembly of a silicon strip 'ladder' which forms part of the silicon vertex detector at the core of the CDF subatomic particle detector at Fermilab, near Chicago. One of the ladder's silicon segments is under the microscope at bottom right and some of its microscopic strips of ultrapure silicon are magnified on the monitor at upper centre. Subatomic particles created in proton-antiproton collisions travel through the vertex detector, ionizing silicon atoms in the strips and giving a recordable electric charge.
