Caption: The Scimitar-Horned Oryx (Oryx dammah) is an herbivore that eats grasses, roots, fruits, and vegetables. Oryx travel in herds and live in the desert and semidesert environment of the Sahara. Their white coats help them stay cool in the desert by reflecting heat and will raise their body temperature up to 116 degrees Fahrenheit to aviod sweating when there are water shortages. The Scimitar-horned Oryx is an endangered species that has been hunted to extinction in the wild. World Wildlife Zoo, Phoenix, Arizona.
