Caption: Fractal geometry: computer graphics representation of a fractal detail of a Julia Set, a class of shapes plotted from complex number coordinates. The Julia Set, invented & studied during World War I by the French mathematicians Gaston Julia & Pierre Fatou, was the source of inspiration for the discovery of the better-known Mandelbrot Set, named after the mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot. Mandelbrot's Set arose as a result of his attempts in the 1970's to rationalise the massive variety of forms of the Julia Set. Mandelbrot had the advantage of the computing resources of IBM and Harvard; image-building tools not available to Julia & Fatou.
