Caption: Emperor Penguins, Aptenodytes forsteri, on fast ice adjacent to Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, October, 2007. The chicks, now off of their parents' feet, are 50-90 days of age. Size varies markedly with the amount of food received from parents. A creche is beginning to form, in which the chicks, left on their own, will stay together and sometimes seek a foster parent. For a while longer, both parents will return periodically from the sea with food.
