Caption: The Orinoco River and its tributaries are home to Typhlonectes natans, the Rio Cauca Caecilian. Aquatic caecilians spend much of their time moving along the bottom of the river where they search for prey. This image depicts the terminal shield or the posterior end of the animal. The cloaca is also shown, a hole accomodating both reproduction and waste removal. This individual was photographed in 2007.
