Caption: Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward (1791-1868), British physician and botanist. Ward was born in London to a doctor, and was destined to follow the family profession. However, he also had an early interest in plants. He is best know for the invention of the Wardian Case, a sealed glass terrarium used for transporting plants. While of considerable use to scientists, it also allowed the shipping of tea plants from China to india, and of rubber plants from Brazil to Sri Lanka and Malaysia, thus allowing commercially valuable produce to come under control of the British Empire. Ward was elected fellow of the Royal Society and Linnean Society, and was a founding member of the Royal Microscopical Society.
