Caption: Sir John Forbes (1787-1861) Scottish physician. Forbes was born in Banffshire, and studied at Edinburgh before enlisting as a surgeon in the Royal Navy in 1806. Ten years later he left the service, completed his medical doctorate and moved to Cornwall. It was there he studied the newly-invented stethoscope, translating Laennec’s book De l’Auscultation Mediate from the French. In 1829 he was elected fellow of the Royal Society. In 1840 he moved to London, and in 1841 was appointed physician to the Royal Household. He was knighted in 1853, and continued to serve the Royal Family until shortly before his death in 1861.
