Caption: Lev Semyonovich Vygotsky (1896-1934), Soviet psychologist. Vygotsky was the founder of cultural-historical psychology. He was born in Orsha in the Russian Empire, in what is now Belarus. He worked in the fields of developmental psychology, child development, and education, and key concepts such as psychological tools, mediation, internalisation, and the zone of proximal development. He covered diverse areas including the origin and psychology of art, development of higher mental functions, the relation between learning and human development, the study of learning disabilities, and abnormal human development.
