Caption: Flour mites mating. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two flour mites (Acarus siro) mating on a piece of cheese. Flour mites are an important pest of stored grain and flour, which they contaminate with allergens. They also carry pathogenic micro-organisms which they transfer to both livestock and humans if the grain is ingested. One mating couple can produce 100,000 young in only 40 days.
