Caption: Fractal geometry. Computer screen image of various parts of a Mandelbrot set fractal. The three regions seen here are parts of the same fractal at different magnifications (increasing left to right). Fractal images are created from the solutions to equations involving complex co- ordinates. The apparently 'random' patterns seen at each magnification in fact reflect the fundamental pattern of the whole. Fractal geometry may be used to model complex natural processes such as weather patterns and concepts such as 'twistors' in theoretical physics.
