Caption: Producing spider silk from plants. Bundle of spider silk fibres produced by genetically modified plants. Spider genes responsible for the production of silk proteins are inserted into the genes of plants to produce these 'spider plants'. This makes the plants produce the proteins and allows for their mass production. Fibres produced from these proteins could be used in various ways including the manufacture of bulletproof vests, biomaterials for the aerospace industry, strings for tennis rackets, and threads for surgical sutures. Photographed at the University of Wyoming, USA.
