Caption: African shrunken head. A shrunken head is a severed and specially prepared human head that is used for trophy, ritual, or trade purposes. First the skull and fat is removed from the head, leaving the skin and flesh, red seeds are placed underneath the eyelids and the eyelids and mouth are sewn shut. After being boiled in water containing tannins, the head is dried with hot rocks and sand, while moulding it to retain its human features. Here, decorative feathers have been placed around the forehead.
