Caption: Gammasphere detector. Researcher with the Gamma- sphere gamma ray detector during the final stages of its assembly. The Gammasphere detects gamma rays emitted by rapidly-spinning, deformed nuclei as they slow down. The characteristic spectrum of these rays gives information on the nuclei's properties, including their size, shape, symmetry and internal flow patterns. The Gammasphere has 110 germanium semiconductor detectors around a small, spherical target chamber. A beam of ions from a cyclotron strikes the target, creating the deformed nuclei. The Gammasphere offers a 100-fold sensitivity improvement over previous detectors.
