Caption: OSTEOPENIA Bone mineral density test (femoral neck). This methods measures the subject's bone mineral density (BMD), and can detect osteopenia (a decrease in bone density) and osteoporosis (pathological reduction in bone density). The chart indicates the patient's BMD (in g/cm2) for their age. Here, a BMD of 0.730 g/cm2, corresponds to an osteopenic condition for a person of this patient's age. The T-score and Z-score indicate the variation between the subject's BMD and an average value which, for the T-score corresponds to that of a population comprising members of the same sex and age group (20-30 year-olds, the age group in which bone density is at its peak), and for the Z-score, that of a population of the same sex and age. A T-score of between 0 and -1 indicates a normal BMD, between -1 and -2.5 indicates osteopenia, and below -2.5 indicates osteoporosis. Here, a T-score of -1.58 means the patient is suffering from mild osteopenia. Results can also be expressed as a percentage.
