Caption: Transmission electron micrograph of a plant cell from the root tip meristem of maize, Zea mays. The meristem is a region of active cell division, from which more permanent specialised tissue is derived. Principal sitesare root tips & stem apices. Dominant in the cell is the nucleus (oval) holding the cell's genetic information. The nucleolus (dark circle) contains RNA & proteins. The cytoplasm holds numerous bodies; vacuoles (white ovals), lipid droplets (smooth gray), proplastids (dark gray with white starch inclusions), mitochondria (granular gray ovals) & ribosomes (black dots) free in the cytoplasm. Mag:X12.000 (10x8 size).
