Caption: Plant cell. Illustration of the internal structure of a typical plant cell. At centre, pearl-like chains of DNA are seen within the dark interior of the nucleus. The outer nuclear membrane (orange) is continuous with the folded, tube-like membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Orange-coloured ER is found throughout the cell cytoplasm. Green chloroplasts contain chlorophyll for photosyn- thesis. Mitochondria (blue) are respiratory organelles that power the cell. Vacuoles (white) are seen filled with crystals. Plant cells have a rigid cell wall (yellow) made of cellulose, with small rounded pits leading to adjacent cells.
