Caption: Sir Charles Mansfield Clarke (1782-1857), First Baronet, English physician. Clarke was born in London and was educated at St.Paul’s School and St.George’s Hospital. He first practiced as a regimental surgeon in the Army. However, his brother persuaded him to resign his commission and return to London. He was famous as an accoucheur (obstetrician), well known for his gentle and sensitive manner with his patients and good nature toward his fellow professionals. In 1825 he was elected fellow of the Royal Society, and in 1827 was appointed physician to Queen Adelaide. His book, Observations on the Diseases of Women and Children, was a standard text for decades.
