Caption: View through the centre (where the particle beam travels) of the MAC (Magnetic Calorimeter) detector on the PEP electron/positron accelerator at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), California. The photograph shows the hole through the cylindrical detector down which particles travel (electrons in one direction, positrons in the other, colliding at the centre of the detector) and some of the mass of wires which carry the signals from the detector to the control electronics.
