Caption: Plant cell. Transmission electron micrograph of a root tip cell from thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana). The dark line surrounding the cell is the cell wall. Inside the cell the nucleus appears as a large, pale area towards the bottom, with a small red nucleolus where DNA is being actively transcribed. The dark area at the top is the vacuole, a fluid-filled cavity that helps maintain the cell's water balance. The smaller structures floating in the cytoplasm are cell organelles such as mitochondria. The organelles carry out a variety of functions such as providing the cell with energy and manufacturing chemicals for export. Magnifciation x5000 at 35mm size.
