Caption: Red onion cells in hypotonic solution. Hypotonic solutions contain low concentration of solute relative to the cells' cytoplasm. When the cells are placed in a hypotonic solution, the water diffuses into the cell, causing the cell to become turgid (swell). 50x at 35 mm film size.
