Caption: Close-up of the finger of an adult male patient, showing squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer) under the nail. Part of the cancer has been excised but not cleared. The tip of the finger was amputated (see images 2-3). This second most common type of skin cancer affects the upper squamous cells of the skin, but tumours may spread (metastasise) to other parts of the body. It is commonly caused by sun damage.
