Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of a freshly prepared protoplast from a tobacco leaf cell, Nicotiana tabacum (cultivar White Burley). A protoplast is a single intact cell, which has been chemically treated to remove the tough outer cellulose wall, leaving only the delicate plasma membrane (seen here) binding the contents of the cell together. Protoplast technology has given rise to two types of genetic experimentation: nuclear fusion, where the cytoplasm & nuclei of two cells are fused, & DNA microinjection, where specific genes are sel- ected from one cell & injected into another.
