Eugenio Coccia, director of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), Abruzzo, Italy, in front of an artwork of the Big Bang and an expanding universe. This site is one of four INFN (Italian national institute of nuclear physics) laboratories. The LNGS is located inside a mountain, and consists of three large experimental halls. The mountain shields the experiments from outside radiation, allowing particle physicists, cosmologists, and astrophysicists, to study rare interactions involving neutrinos and other particles.
