Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of protoplasts from a tobacco leaf cell, Nicotiana tabacum (cultivar Xanthi). A protoplast is a single intact cell, which has been chemically treated to remove the tough outer cellulose wall, leaving only the delicate plasma membrane (seen here), binding the contents of the cell together. Protoplast techno- ogy has given rise to two types of genetic exper- imentation; nuclear fusion, where the cytoplasm & nuclei of two cells are fused, & DNA microinject- ion, where specific genes are selected from one cell & injected into another. This work is pertin- ent to agriculture, medicine & biotechnology. Magnification: X256 at 35mm, X2000 at 10x8-inches.
