Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of the surface of a protoplast (cell with wall removed) from a leaf of the tobacco plant Nicotiana tabacum. The micro- graph shows cellulose microfibrils regrowing over the plasma membrane after 14 hours in a chemical solution; the fibrils will eventually form a thick, smooth, durable outer coat. The ability to remove the cell wall makes possible experiments such as nuclear fusion and DNA microinjection, a method for transference of genetic information. The work is relevant to agriculture, biotechnology & medicine. Magnification: X 3430 at 35mm size. 8x10" = X 24,000.
