Caption: Transmission electron micrograph of root cells in the tip of maize, Zea mays. The black outline shows the connection between the nuclear envelope & the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), & the passage of ER (flattened tubes) through pores in the cell wall called plasmodesmata. The nuclear envelope is a double membrane surrounding the nucleus (oval). The dark region in the nucleus is a nucleolus. Ribosomal RNA is produced here & passed to the cytoplasm where it forms ribosomal particles (sites of protein synthesis). Ribosomes collect on the surface of ER & their synthesised products are conveyed by ER to the cell & beyond. Magnification X18,000 (10x8), X2570 (35mm size).
