Caption: Transmission electron micrograph of dictyosomes (Golgi apparatus) in the root cap cell of maize, Zea mays. The dictyosomes are the two stacks of light grey bodies, pinched in at the middle; they are engaged in secreting a slimy mucus which eases the passage of the root tip through the soil; dictyosomes are also involved in other cellular activities such as the production of the cell wall at cell division. The dark grey bodies are mitochondria, the sites of respiration; the long thin strands studded with dark grey dots are rough endoplasmic reticulum, the site of protein synthesis. Magnification: x6430 at 35mm size, x45,000 at 8x10-inch size. The dictyosomes make up the Golgi apparatus unit. They are swollen because of the mucus secretion,.
