Caption: Flaccid cell. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a plant cell which has lost it's turgidity after "stress". The cell's vacuole (blue) is a membrane bound cavity of water with dissolved sugars, salts and chemicals. Around the vacuole, the cell's organelles are seen enclosed by the cell wall (black). Under normal conditions, full vacuoles support the by exerting pressure against the cell wall and stopping the plant wilting. Certain sensitive plants, when subjected to "stress", can rapidly wilt and curl their leaves. This ability may be, in part, due to the vacuole expelling water (as seen here) and causing wilting. See image B095/001 for turgid cell.
