Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of an amyloplast (large central body), a starch- containing plastid, found in a cell from the root cap of an onion, Allium cepa. Amyloplasts contain large quantities of starch (blue globules). In the root cap these plastids act as statoliths by sinking to the bottom of the cell, thereby indicating to the root the downward direction of growth. Magnification x18,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
