Caption: Soil-cleaning bacteria research. Soil scientist monitoring conditions in a bioreactor that is using immobilized bacteria to remove nitrates from agricultural wastewater. Nitrates in the runoff water from farm fields come from the use of nitrogenous fertilisers. Excessive amounts of nitrates entering rivers and other ecosystems can damage the environment. This experiment is intended to find a way to remove or digest the nitrates in the water before they can cause any damage.
