Caption: Transmission electron micrograph of a chloroplast from the leaf of a coleus plant, Coleus blumei. The elongated chloroplast is crossed by stacks of grana, where chlorophyll pigments, utilised during photosynthesis, are stored. These light sensitive pigments are able to convert the sun's energy into the chemical energy required by the plant. The granal stacks are connected by 'frets', which appear as dark bands. The white body is a large starch grain, a product of photosynthesis. Other small white patches broken by fine lines are nucleoids, which are the sites of DNA in chloroplasts. Magnification X39,000 (at 10x8 size), X5570 (at 35mm size).
