Caption: Light micrograph of stages of mitosis (cell division) in cells from an onion, Allum sp. The nucleus divides in four stages; prophase, metaphase, anaphase & telophase. Prior to mitosis each chromosome (dark-red stain) makes a copy of itself. At the start of mitosis the original and copy separate from each other & migrate to opposite poles along a spindle apparatus . The chromosomal complement is thus divided into identical copies forming two daughter nuclei. Cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm & growth of a cell wall) may follow forming separate cells. In some cases the nucleus divides without building a cell wall forming a multinucleate cell.
