Caption: Metaphase in a root cell. Light micrograph of the metaphase stage of mitosis (cell division) in a cell of the hyacinth root, Hyacinthus sp. The nuclei of cells are yellow; cell contents are blue. The cell at centre is in metaphase, in which its nucleus has composed itself into thread-like chromosomes. These chromosomes have become aligned in one plane along the equator of the cell, before they divide. The movement of the chromosomes has been due to microtubules (not visible) in the cell cytoplasm. This image is one of a series of five illustrating the process of mitosis in the hyacinth root (see: B215/039, B215/040, B215/042, B215/043). Magnification: unknown.
