Caption: Plant cell mitosis. Light micrograph (LM) of root tip cells of the onion (Allium sp.) undergoing cell division (mitosis). Before the cell divides, the chromosomes start to appear as long thread- like structures (centre right). Each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids. These sister chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite ends of the cell (centre). Nuclear membranes then form around the two daughter nuclei and the cell divides. Resting nuclei are also shown (dark circles).
