Caption: Light micrograph (nomarski) of a heart shaped embryo of the turnip, Brassica campestris, (7 days old). The embryo, the heart shape, is attached to a stalk called the suspensor, which is 6-7 cells long. The suspensor is an anchoring mechanism, & the route for much of the nutrition of the growing embryo. The embryo contains thousands of cells. The heart shape prefigures the formation of the cotyledons (seed leaves). Each lobe will be a single cotyledon. The future root emerges from the bottom of the heart, near the suspensor, while the shoot arises from the top centre of the heart.Mag: X25 (35mm size).
