Caption: False colour transmission electron micrograph of a dissected embryo of the turnip Brassica campestris, removed from the ovule 3 days after pollination. The embryo develops from a fertilised egg called a zygote. At 3 days it consists of a 6-7 celled suspensor (stalk) & a 16 celled small globular region called the proembryo. The micrograph shows a section through the first cell of the suspensor & six cells from the globular region. The globular region will develop into the shoot & seed leaves (cotyledons) & the first cell of the suspensor into the root. Fragments around the embryo are remnants of endosperm tissue. Magnification: X500 at 35mm size. Original is BW print B216/010.
