Caption: Light micrograph of the bacteria Leptospira, a genus of the corkscrew bacteria (Spirochaete). These organisms have been divided serologically into a large number of types. Many are pathogens of animals & they are excreted in urine & may enter new hosts through skin abrasions or mucous membranes. The disease varies in intensity from a mild influenza-like illness to fatal form of jaundice. Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae is the cause of Weil's disease in man, characterized by fever,jaundice,enlarged liver, nephritis & bleeding from mucous membranes. Magnification: x160 at 35mm size.
