Caption: Proteus. Light micrograph of the bacteria Proteus sp. (also known as Providencia sp). This is a rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacteria. The cell (at upper centre) is covered by many tail-like flagellae for movement. They are found in the intestines & in decaying organic matter. Proteus sp. is not generally considered to be pathogenic, although enterotoxins produced when the bacteria are ingested in large numbers may cause acute gastroenteritis. Species associated with disease in humans are Proteus morganii (causing acute enteritis in infants) & Proteus vulgaris (causing urinary tract infections). Magnification: x330 at 35mm size.
